Ready Set Go

Hello Sports Fans,

It’s the beginning of Spring and time for a new adventure. This one involves driving from Chicago to Los Angeles on old Route 66 (or as much of it that still exists after the proliferation of Expressways and Freeways).

The idea for the trip emanated from Ray Scherr, one of my Monday morning rally drivers. Ray has an extraordinary car collection and his big problem will be to decide which car to take of the trip. In the end, he decided to take two; a ‘55 Lancia Outlaw (which he and his cousin, Jay Scherr will drive) and a ‘33 Ford Brizo hot rod (which will be driven by his son, Jason and Ritchie Wilson, our group mechanic).

My brother, David, and I are driving together (can you imagine 10 days with your brother in a car; at least we’re both lefties, so politics won’t be the problem) in my wife, Ilene’s 1999 VW Beattie with Daisy Wheels…..hey, they said to bring a funky car. We have all the latest accruements including a cassette player.

Also on the trip is Marvin Landon and his buddy, Charles Bush driving a 1966 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz…….biggest boat you’ve ever seen. Marv thinks he will have to fill up four times more often than our VW……we’ll keep track of that.

The other participants are Stanley Bauer and Simon Rubin (boyhood friends from South Africa), driving another ‘33 Ford Brizo…..my only comment: solid axel and a very bumpy ride.

Finally, we have Nina Vo, Ray’s assistant, driving an SUV with all of our luggage and gear…….and possibly racers from broken down cars; just joking.

Our first night’s dinner is at Joe’s Stone Crab and tomorrow we’ll probably look at car collections before collecting our cars and starting the journey.

This is the car that Stanley Bauer and Simon Rubin will be driving on Route 66.
